Be aware of health insurance liens and scams if involved in an accident

Following an accident you will receive paperwork from several insurance companies.  Depending on the type of accident, you may receive forms and phone calls  from your personal insurance company, the other party’s insurance company, workers’ compensation insurance, and health insurance or Medicare.  If your medical bills are paid by your personal health insurance, particularly a union funded insurance, Medicare, or state health insurance, then you may receive paperwork from a health insurance lien company claiming to be entitled to reimbursement.  Some liens must be paid back under Connecticut and Federal law, others are not reimbursable.  Unfortunately, you may also receive phone calls and paperwork from unscrupulous people attempting to gain your personal information. If you receive paperwork or a phone call from a company that you do not recognize, do not give out your personal information.  Do not sign anything that you do not understand.
